TEAM Paddlers

Johann Swart

Before Johann discovered his current love for kayaking, he was dividing his time between surfing, fishing, hiking, mountain biking or whatever little adventure he could conjure up. All of that however ended in 2012 when he decided to buy a second hand creekboat to use for fishing. Needless to say, he hasn’t been fishing since. Since 2012, Johann has paddled in Zambia, Uganda, Swaziland, Austria and all over South Africa.

Having worked as a photojournalist for several years, his trusty Pelican case and camera is always there to document the natural grandeur that makes all of us return to our rivers time after time.

Kayaking is more than a sport or a hobby for me – it is truly a way of life! It is a portal to deep happiness and provides me with much more than just physical challenge and a sense of accomplishment. It is also my spiritual happy place, a place of solitude and reflection, a place of learning, testing, sharpening. It is a reason to wake up every morning and push myself a little harder.

I get stoked on all forms of river kayaking from the mellow meanderings of swirling currents to the adrenaline energy of thundering waterfalls and I crave the challenge of running hard whitewater that leaves most people thinking… but WHY?!!

Kayaking has taken me to over 30 countries on 5 continents so far… and the to-do list just continues to grow!!

Location: Kwa-Zulu Natal, South Africa

Disciplines: Expeditions, creeking, river-running, playboating, slalom, canoe-polo, marathons

Tammy Muir

I have been kayaking for about 3 and half years, primarily in South Africa but I have also paddled in Swaziland. I love kayaking and the feeling you get when you look back at a rapid you were nervous for and you know you had a good line. I get so much out of paddling, I get to see amazing places and meet awesome people. I compete in most of the competitions/festivals in South Africa. I enjoy competing even though there are normally not many females competing, I like to try my best and see where I fall in among the men. I am part of a female kayaking group called Fluid Females our objective is to get more women involved with the sport.

DEON J Breytenbach

Deon is the operations manager for the Blyde Adventure camp. He has been paddling for a long time and his work means he is 1 part river. Deon is a competitive paddler and when he can get away from the Canyon has often placed in the top 3 of freestyle and riverrunning events.

His work means interacting with large school groups as well as smaller groups of fun seekers. He is naturally likeable, instils confidence, and is all round a cool guy. Deon has taken his love for paddling one step further and has organised weekly kayak lessons at school in the area. We have seen competitors at the Blyde Fest as young as 10 years old.
